The first time I ever saw a basenji was on television about 32 years ago and it was the movie Goodbye My Lady starring Brandon DeWilde and Walter Brennan. Needless to say once I had seen Lady on screen I was very taken with her.

I tried at the time to find out more about basenjis, but the limited books available at the time were out of the reach of a young boy on pocket money. Living with parents who were not really into dogs further made the Basenji an almost impossible dream.

It took some time, but I never forgot the dream. I met Josie (now my wife) who was more into cats than dogs, and after showing her some basenji babies she discovered that they are more like cats than dogs. Josie soon fell in love with the breed as well.

In 1994 we brought home our first two basenjis, Shani and Zawadi. Their breeder introduced us to the Dog Show scene; needless to say we now show most weekends both locally and Interstate.

The years for us have been a non-stop valuable learning experience for us, both in the show scene and out but most of all, learning about this unique breed and its history.

The Akale aim is simple : breeding to improve the breed. Type, temperament and soundness are essential.

We feel it is important as breeders to be aware of our strengths and weaknesses within our kennel, and continue to improve. Our aim is to selectively breed and pick only the best offspring in any litter to retain for our showing and breeding.
